China Backs India’s UN Security Council Ambitions
“The Chinese side expressed its support for a successful BRICS Summit in India,” the Indian Foreign Ministry stated. “[Vice Minister Ma] also conveyed that China understands and respects India’s aspirations for UNSC membership.”
The discussion took place during the India-China Strategic Dialogue, with Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri meeting Ma, who was visiting India to participate in the BRICS Sherpa Meeting. Chinese Ambassador to India Xu Feihong later noted that the two countries should work to deepen mutual trust, expand cooperation, manage differences constructively, and strengthen bilateral ties.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry described the talks as a “friendly, candid, and in-depth communication on international and regional issues of shared interest, and bilateral ties.”
Both sides also emphasized the need to finalize an updated Air Services Agreement, following the resumption of direct flights between the two countries in October 2025 after a five-year hiatus. Additionally, they pledged to support each other’s roles as BRICS Chair for 2026 and 2027, with India currently holding the presidency.
The warming of relations between India and China began after a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping in October 2024 during the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia. The two leaders met again at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Tianjin in September 2025, agreeing to enhance cooperation further.
