Beijing Confirms Strong Direct Dialogue Between Xi, Trump

(MENAFN) Beijing emphasized on Tuesday that Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping continue to engage in “close exchanges and communication,” underscoring the pivotal role of direct dialogue between the two leaders in shaping China-US relations.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun stated at a Beijing press briefing, “The head-of-state diplomacy plays an irreplaceable strategic guiding role in China-US relations,” highlighting the importance of ongoing presidential interactions amid mounting economic friction.

Guo’s remarks followed President Trump’s Monday announcement that he plans to visit China “at some point, probably during this year or shortly thereafter,” signaling a potential easing of diplomatic strains.

“We hope the US will work in the same direction with China and promote the steady, sound, and sustainable development of China-US relations,” Guo added, as reported by media. “The heads of state of China and the US maintain close exchanges and communication.”

In addressing trade disagreements, Guo reaffirmed China’s intention to nurture the bilateral relationship based on “mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and willing cooperation,” while asserting the necessity to firmly protect “its own sovereignty, security, and development interests.”

This response came amid Washington’s claims of gaining leverage over Beijing in trade negotiations. On Monday, Trump threatened to impose a “200% tariff ‘or something’” on China if it fails to supply the US with rare earth magnets, though he tempered concerns by saying, “we’re not going to have a problem.”

Trump acknowledged that while Beijing still retains “some” influence over Washington, DC, the US holds “bigger and better cards” in the ongoing trade dynamics.

Reacting to Trump’s tariff threats, Guo stated bluntly, “We have made clear China's position on the tariff issue many times,” signaling China’s firm stance against escalating trade measures.

The dialogue between the two nations remains critical as economic tensions escalate, with both sides seeking a path to stable, constructive engagement.
