Top Chinese, Russian Diplomats Discuss Regional Issues

(MENAFN) The chief diplomats of China and Russia recently engaged in talks covering a range of regional and international matters.

Their discussions included the current state of affairs on the Korean Peninsula, the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the nuclear situation involving Iran, as well as relations with the United States.

On Sunday, Wang Yi, China’s top diplomat, convened with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in Beijing.

Lavrov had just arrived in the Chinese capital following a three-day trip to North Korea, where he participated in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) foreign ministers’ meeting scheduled for Tuesday in northern Tianjin.

A statement from Beijing revealed that Wang and Lavrov exchanged "views" on key issues such as the Korean Peninsula, the crisis in Ukraine, and the Iranian nuclear matter, though no further specifics were provided.

It is significant that during Lavrov’s meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Saturday, Kim reiterated Pyongyang’s "unconditional support" for Moscow in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Meanwhile, China has consistently advocated for a political approach to bring an end to the war, which has been ongoing since February 2022.

The Russian Foreign Ministry reported that the discussions also touched on relations with the United States, the Iran-Israel dispute, and the Korean Peninsula situation.

"The parties also discussed relations with the United States and prospects for resolving the Ukrainian crisis in accordance with the principles of the UN Charter in their entirety, totality, and interrelation," the ministry stated.
